Investment Approach

Fairfax is a "committed" investor, in every sense. The managers take an active management role in each portfolio company, identifying and evaluating each promising opportunity; developing a strategy to address the opportunity; and writing the business plan, often with an existing management team that shares the firm’s vision for the company. If no management team exists, the firm will identify and hire an experienced team that has has a track record of building successful companies. Fairfax will not make an investment before key management is in place.
Fairfax becomes intimately involved with its portfolio companies, providing management and professional services while helping them raise capital to implement their business plans. Portfolio CEOs and other senior management have all been through the process – often several times before. Many have built companies themselves and have been through the process of taking a company public or selling to a larger corporate entity. If no management team exists, Fairfax will identify and hire an experienced team. Fairfax will not make an investment before key management is in place.
The firm has no more than three or four active investments at any one time, which facilitates focused attention on and involvement in each company. Fairfax managers have variously served on corporate boards or as senior corporate executives, as well as senior Government officials and heads of Executive Branch agencies.
This depth of experience and approach to acquiring and running companies has proven to be successful time and again for our investors.
